It runs on a special liquid that runs as a substitute for blood, which is injected into the bloodstream and runs from the mechanical heart like a normal heart. She has created smaller versions of the heart for animals, like an axolotl Lola and Mason found one day, which they named Jimmy. The axolotl had a failing heart and was dying, so Lola begged her mom to make a small one for Jimmy.
