A.B. Laster was born with the rare power to create real magic, not tricks or illusions. He could truly pull coins from ears and rabbits from hats, earning fame across all three kingdoms as The Magician. Despite his fantastic performances, people dismissed his feats as clever tricks, so he began signing his posters with the quote: “It’s not a trick!” (It is his pet peeve when people call his powers a trick.)

The Duke of Duskbury, Keiran Blackthorne, was ruling Duskbury while the King was off at war to aid Emberstein with the battles between them and Ashbourne at the time when The Magician was at his peak. He was secretly plotting to kill the King so he can take the crown, and was secretly sending war machinery to Ashbourne. He thought that The Magician would be a great weapon. When the Duke ordered him to assassinate King Augustus or face banishment, A.B. chose exile. He vanished into the Forest of No Return, leaving his family behind and disappearing for ten years, until Mason found him, weary and wilted like a dying flower.
